It is easy as we move about our lives both personally and professionally to forget just how fortunate and blessed each one of us is to be part of such a caring group of people. Recently, at the training division, we stumbled upon some old papers and archived items. It was interesting to go back in time and re-familiarize ourselves with the fact that we are carrying on a tradition that began for the citizens nearly 120 years ago. The establishment of the Seattle Fire Department so long ago and those that served before us should not be forgotten.

Each one has a brief description about its purpose in the fire department. We hope that you all are able to read the short document and reflect on the rich history of OUR fire department and it's members that should always be remembered.

It is true, many traditions can hold back a fire department from growing with the times. It is also true that some tradition, that promotes a safe and healthy cultural attitude should be remembered and nourished. Young members are encouraged to ask questions of the veterans. These "old wise ones" know more than you might imagine. Veterans, please pass along history and useful, safe information to those that will someday be leading this department into the future just as you are now. Thank you for your time and dedication!

East Pierce Fire Chief Dan Packer Memorial

It is with great sorrow that the WSCFF says good-by to Fire Chief Daniel Packer. East Pierce Fire & Rescue Chief Dan Packer died Saturday, July 26, 2008, while battling a California wildfire. He is survived by wife Marylee, four daughters, and two grandchildren.

MDA Fill the Boot, July 18, 2008

First of TWO MDA Fill the Boots was a Success!

Eighty-six Seattle Fire Fighters and friends raised over $33,000 in one day at 8 intersections throughout Seattle on July 18^th. All of the money collected supports local clinics at the University of Washington Medical Center and at Children’s Hospital, purchases automated wheelchairs, sponsors family support groups, and sends children afflicted with this terrible disease to MDA Summer Camp. This year donated funds were used to develop a treatment that reverses the effects of Pompe’s Disease, one of the 40 neuromuscular diseases known as Muscular Dystrophy. Thank you to the following intersection coordinators who spent hours recruiting volunteers, ensuring the intersections were properly set up, and making the event enjoyable for all the volunteers: Brandon Smith, Gene Goodner, Erina Queen, Jill Firestone, Dallas Baker, Paul Hansen, and Stephen Eney.
