Fire Fighters Family Medical is the medical benefit Trust under the Seattle Fire Fighters Union, Local 27. Family Medical provides three different medical plans for active and retired fire fighters, including their spouses, domestic partners and children. Also, since 1999, the retiree medical plan and Medicare supplemental plans are available to not only retired Seattle Fire Fighters, but also any fire fighter, in good standing, who retired from an IAFF Local in the State of Washington, according to LEOFF I and LEOFF II retirement qualifications.

City of Seattle Fire Fighter

Any City of Seattle fire fighter may join Fire Fighters Family Medical and apply for the supplemental insurance to their City Aetna Plan or their City Group Health Plan. All spouses, domestic partners and children are also eligible for this Plan.

Retirees

Fire Fighters Family Medical offers a comprehensive medical plan for the LEOFF I spouses, domestic partners and children as well as the LEOFF II fire fighter, spouses, domestic partners and children. Retired fire fighters from outside Local 27 are eligible for associate membership in Local 27. The cost is five dollars per month for the purpose of participating in the medical Benefit Trust, as long as the appropriate eligibility requirements are met. (Request Plan Brochure from the Family Medical office) As a convenience, all dues are deducted from the fire fighters monthly pension check.

Retiree Medicare Supplemental Plan

Prior Act fire fighters and spouses, LEOFF I spouses and LEOFF II fire fighters and spouses who are enrolled in the Medicare Part A,  Part B  and Part D plans are eligible for the Fire Fighters Family Medical supplemental Medicare Plan.

Plan History and Employees

Fire Fighters Family Medical was started by Local 27 in 1949 as the Hospital Association for City of Seattle fire fighters and their families. Over the years the medical plan has changed and expanded to include coverage for the active Seattle fire fighters, retired Seattle fire fighters and finally retired IAFF fire fighters from the State of  Washington.

Susan Lang is the Plan Administrator and has been with Local 27 since 1987. Stacie Dodson is the assistant Plan Administrator who handles the retiree and Medicare claims. Sid Gill, a retired  Seattle fire fighter and retired Local 27 board member takes care of the City of Seattle active fire fighter claims. Sid works part time and is in the office Wednesday through Friday. Bob Anderson, also a retired Seattle fire fighter and retired Local 27 board member looks after the financial workings of Family Medical. Bob is in the office Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sid and Bob, each, have been involved with Local 27 is some capacity for over thirty years!
