He was born October 2, 1930 in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. He worked as an industrial firefighter "lead hoseman" for the International Paper Company in Longview, Washington, before joining the Seattle Fire Department on April 15, 1957. He spent the majority of his career at Station 8, also working for a time at Station 20. On March 23, 1969 he was appointed to Lieutenant and assigned to Ladder 1. From 1970 through 1973 he was assigned to supervise the newly formed Mobile Intensive Care Unit (Medic 1) firefighters undergoing paramedic certification at Harborview Hospital. Lieutenant Yantis received his paramedic certification on September 25, 1972, and he was instrumental in the success of the Medic 1 program in its infancy. He later worked in the Fire Marshall's Office, where he retired from in 1982. Shortly thereafter, Lieutenant Yantis began at the University of Washington in Environmental and Health Services, Fire Safety Division, where he worked as a Fire Marshall for 20 years. At the UW, Lietenant Yantis was a familiar face, especially to Station 17 members on prefires, inspections, and occasional alarms. He was much valued and admired for his cheerful attitude and proactive and helpful work at the University, and he was a strong advocate for fire fighter priorities.
The family is not planning a memorial service at this time; however, remembrances can be made to the Medic One Foundation. |
