Announcing the new Local 27 Guide to Injuries, Illness and Disability

Author: Local27   |   November 29, 2022
Crossroads sign for physical, mental, and emotional roads

Unlike a planned Service Retirement, Disability Retirement is usually unplanned.

While we can’t eliminate all of the stress that comes with an unplanned retirement, this guide is designed to help reduce some of the stress—especially the stress that comes from not understanding the process and/or not knowing your options.

A long time in the making, your Seattle Fire Fighters Health Care Trust, in association with Local 27, have created this guide with all members in mind. They have worked tirelessly with the City of Seattle, Department of Retirement Services, Department of Labor and Industries, Sharpe Law Form, and many others to bring the most up-to-date and relevant information together.

This quick guide is designed to answer common questions about dealing with on-the-job and off-duty injuries, illnesses, health problems (including exposure), and dependent care. The guide will help you address your immediate injury or illness-related questions and issues, understand workers’ compensation, file your claim, collect applicable long-term disability benefits, return to work if you’re able, and—if you’re unable to return to work—understand your disability retirement options.
